Depending on where you live and what you call local
news, there may be 1000's of local news posts on the
Zipper or a dozen. If there's 100 people in your town,
not much might be going on but that doesn't make it less
important to you. What happens if there are 100's or
1000's of local news or local gossip posts per day on
the Zipper. How do you possible handle that much info
and more importantly, how do you find what you are most
interested in. Let's take a look at the search function
and how it brings your local news to you.
The
Zipper already has some built-in tools to help you
filter all the possible local news zips. Of course, you
have the channels which are essentially categories that
limit the available posts by topics such as deals,
gossip, or music. The system also keeps track of an
implied popularity of available posts based on the
Thumbs, # of rezips, and freshness. This is a great way
to just get important and up to date local news hits
from the main window but sometimes you're looking for
something specific and no one wants to scan through all
the different posts to find what you're looking for (if
that was even feasible). Enter the search function.
At
the top of the window, next to the Channel and Location
drop downs, you will see the search bar. This is the
place to go. It's pretty straight forward. You type in
a particular name, place, or thing that you're looking
for. For example, let's say you want to find out what's
happening after homecoming or if you're time-challenged,
when the homecoming is actually going to occur. Just
search on "homecoming" or better yet, your actual high
school's name + "homecoming" for more specific local
news hits related to this search. Once you hit the
Search button, a list of posts (which still have the
applied filtering based on popularity mentioned above)
will appear that have your search term in the title and
or re-zip although the main post will have priority over
rezips. You can always research with more or less
specific search terms to find exactly what you're
looking for. So when's a good time to use the search
function.
Of
course, there are the times when you need to find
something specific. It could be by searching for a
particular person such as a gossip search. For this,
you would flip the Channel to Gossip and then search for
the person in question. Maybe just run a test search
for you to make sure no one's talking junk about you!
That's a perfect example of using the search function in
combination with a filtering Channel to further
fine-tune your results. Let's say you're planning to
out to a bar or restaurant with friends. Run a search
on that restaurant to see if there are any deals
available (you can select the "Deals or Eats" channel to
further narrow your results). You can see what else is
going on with that particular restaurants. Maybe
they're closed or change menu items. Maybe certain
items are really good while others are average at best.
They might have a 2 for 1 drink special before 5:30.
Good news...guess you and the crew have reason to get
there at 5 instead of 6.
The
search function is a powerful tool when combined with
both local news and local gossip to help you get the
information you want right away. We'll let you come up
with all the different ways to put it to use.
